Moussa Sene Absa is truly a Renaissance man. An accomplished painter and filmmaker--he has over 10 documentaries and feature films to his credit--the artist also plans to open a self-funded artists-in-residence program and center in his hometown of Dakar by December of 1998. Absa is also a singer, song-writer (he has written an opera) and seasoned actor with credits in theater and film. In addition, with his work as a screenwriter whose work garnered numerous prizes, including a prestigious award at the Festival of Fort-de-France in 1987, it can honestly be said of Absa that he is consumed and impassioned by the arts.

Absa has been exhibiting his vivid and boldly colorful paintings since 1976. Working in a style that evokes a combination of Rufino Tamayo and Joan Miro, the artist has shown his pieces throughout Europe, Africa and now, in the United States.

A selection of Absa's paintingsare also on view from April 15 through May 15 at the Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery at Lincoln Center in New York City. The exhibit opened with the premiere of the New York African Film Festival, in which Absa's internationally successful film, Tableau Feraille, was presented.

Moussa Sene Absa's fine art is represented by Osayande Sekani in Los Angeles.
